2015 Lion Heart Walk Battery Park, NYC

Lion Heart is committed to finding a cure for breast cancer. Founded and led by Kathleen van Rijn, Lion Heart supports Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven by endowing breast cancer research grants.

Lion Heart is a team dedicated to supporting one another, fund raising, and having fun doing it. Lion Heart raises money by conducting events. Pictured above, Kathleen van Rijn and the Lion Hearts before walking New Yorkís Hudson River Greenway, September 19, 2015.

Lion Heart also raises funds by conducting Lap-a-thons. These swimming events are held in New Haven and Old Lyme in October, November and January and are led by two swim coaches, Kathleenís sister, Martha Phelan and Coach Jen Lyman.

In 2015, Lion Heart raised $103,000 and since its inception in 2007, the team has raised over $530,000. Every dollar raised matters since 100% goes to the Lion Heart Fund for Cancer Research. There are no overhead or administrative costs incurred and all of the funding goes directly to the research beneficiaries of Lion Heart grants.

Lion Heart receives applications for research grants from Yale Cancer Center researchers looking for pilot funding to begin interesting new avenues of exploration. In December, 2015, the Lion Heart Fund for Cancer Research awarded its fourth series of research grants for 2016.

The funds raised by Lion Heart team members have the potential to aid breakthrough research and truly make a difference. Lion Heartís goal is to help find a cure for breast cancer through its support of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.
